Part 3

On Sunday, I drove up to Larkspur, CO to visit the Colorado Renaissance Faire. I’ve missed the Southern Faire in Los Angeles. This didn’t disappoint. In fact it reminded me even more of the old Northern California Renaissance Pleasure Faire when it was still outside of Novato, CA. Wide paths with plenty of tree cover, allowed for breezes to flow through made it comfortable. The entertainment was good for the most part but some acts were outstanding. I was amused by “Snot and Puke”, enjoyed the “Pirate Shantyman and Bonnie Lass” and I was very impressed by the acrobats “Barely Balanced.” One thing that amused me is that most of the performers were not strictly in “period” character through their shows. The festival must not have the hard core provisions. Most people didn’t care and deeply enjoyed the shows. Unlike the Southern Faire in LA, there weren’t a massive number of Middle Eastern stalls and vendors but there was a good improvised Raks Sharki (Belly Dance) performance that appeared on an unused stage.

While wandering the Faire, I was surprised to find well known fantasy artist Ruth Thompson there selling prints. One print stood out to me so much that I ordered a copy as a gift. I hope it will be appreciated. I picked up a few other goodies at the shops. I also was happy to see a bird of prey conservation and rescue center booth at the faire. They had a small barn owl, a hawk and a turkey vulture out being shown. Beautiful birds all.

I did get one other surprise. For years, I’ve found myself to effectively been allergic to Shea Butter. It would normally make my skin red after only a few moments of contact. The herbalist (and bath product merchant) noted their goods were with all naturally processed Shea versus the industrially processed stuff. I tried a small sample and it didn’t affect me. Since it didn’t cause me discomfort and red skin, I think I’ll be in touch with them to find suppliers for Brenna’s creations. Some stuff advertised as all natural obviously aren’t.

Ah the memories and the fun. Stu just sent an update to the Boggards mailing list and I had to share it.

Tonight, Fright Night LA. Woot! It's fun and you should ALL try to get there at least once. The kids and I are going out to the Souterh California Renaissance Pleasure Faire on Saturday. It's very likely that after dropping the kids off at the homestead afterwards, I will be headed to The Radioactive Chicken Heads show in LA. Trish may be joining me, in which case we may also or alternatively visit Bar Sinister too. Sunday, fencing/youth combat practice early and Dr. Sketchy's LA late..

Damn, I need a weekend from my weekend.

BTW, the next sets of photos incoming will be from:

The Bobbie Burlesque Valentine's show (what I can salvage),
The San Diego Wander in March;
&
Abandoned Sites along the Route 66 (Victorville to Barstow)

Speaking of abandoned sites, I'm making one final effort to get onto the former George AFB (Southern California Logistics Airport) to photograph several buildings. In fact, I contacted the authorities who manage the site, because the pace of demolition has increased dramatically as has their security measures. Over 50 buildings (mainly housing and 1950's era warehouses) have been torn down in the last 3 months. Phase 2 of their renovation plans kicks off in two months and another 54 buildings will be pulled down.

Every year that I’ve gone to this faire, I’ve always been struck by how relaxed and even detached players and visitors alike become close to closing time. The level of relaxation is almost tastable in the breeze. This year was no exception and yielded some of the best shots. I’ll close out with this set of shots.

Carried over from part one

There are certain entertainers that are good, some that are funny, others that reach out and grab your attention, and then there’s the ones that pin you to the ground and pummel you with all of the above. This would certainly be a great description for The Poxy Boggards. These photos were taken are the sun darted in and out of the haze and clouds over the Faire. I some cases, I’ve been able to post them as is. In other cases, extensive light and contrast adjustments have been necessary. Where the photos were good, they are in 12 x 8 format. Where I’m not so happy with color, contrast or detail capture, I dropped them down to 9 x 6.

In the continuing posts from the Southern Renaissance Pleasure Faire, interaction between participants and players is one of the most wondrous parts of the experience. Unlike SCA where persona has merely become a research tool, these good folks take on and (usually) stay in character. It’s in this respect that sometimes I wish SCA could be more like Faire. Just like us, these folks (mostly) have mundane regular jobs during the week, or go to school. Unlike us, Faire is a job where they contribute and make (lose) a small amount of money. It’s the whole take the good with the bad recognition I suppose.

More people watching at the Faire. As the day progressed, more sights and sounds we took in. T'ws a grand day!

When I noted several days ago I had a bunch of pictures to post, I really wasn’t kidding. I still have about 200 photos from Descanso Gardens, more shots from Santa Monica and a small but important set of Ren Faire photos I need to resize and reformat.

What I wasn’t anticipating was my ISP and the phone company they use, crapping out on me intermittently the past three days. Earthlink (ISP) and Verizon (phone and data system support) has been having on-going troubles in the Pasadena switching center. Who knows, maybe they’re installing wire-tapping or spy gear for all I know, but the system was not working. Now that it is, I can offer you these further pictures from

Without further adieu – the Belles of Bedlam. WARNING! Some of these photos are oversized (8” x 12”)! 20+ behind the cut

What happens when a love potions works too well? The gentleman is complaining (!!!) that a love potion has made his wife overly amorous and he can’t get anything done. These are shots from the “Privy Court” just prior to the Poxy Boggards’ show. Enjoy!

This was actually one of the more relaxed weekends we’ve had in a while. Actually for me, it started on Thursday evening. Immediately after fencing practice, Vikki, my kids and I went to Mythos Greek restaurant. Several SCA belly dancers who perform professionally were hosting a large performance there. It was very, very nice. I also just happened to bring along my camera and get a bunch of photos, but I want to get personal approval from some of the subjects before I post shots here.

Friday, I worked on photos and tried getting a bunch more reformatted and resized. I’m going to put off the Carmen set for the time being so I can better get a grasp on using Photoshop. Even though I think the raw photos are very pleasing, artistic and well set-up (model included), I want to polish them a bit. I know this is terribly out of character for me being the purist that I am towards manipulation and artistic license Photoshop seems to provide. We’ll see.

Saturday, I took the kids to Descanso Gardens in La Canada. OMG, the place is gorgeous and the smell is heavenly. Between Brenna and I, we probably shot close to 250 frames of the flowers, wildlife and the various settings. It was well worth the cost and the time. I’ll have some of these photos up shortly.

BTW, I promised photos from the Southern Renaissance Pleasure Faire a few days ago. I was in a somewhat warped mood and started from the middle of the day in reformatting and adjusting the light and color (with PictureIt). These are shots from the “Privy Court” just prior to the Poxy Boggards’ show. Enjoy!
