Uncommon sense

My daughter Brenna has approached me with a request. After almost two months, she wants to quit soccer. Even though she’s going to be on a tournament bound team, has a great coach and (surprisingly) supportive teammates, she wants to pack it in. ‘Why?’ I asked her (waiting for one excuse or another). The honest and genuine reply floored me. She said school was more important and she wanted to focus on it more thoroughly than she had been able to lately. She further noted that the majority of her homework was given on the days corresponding to her soccer practice evenings. Although she said she initially was enjoying the game, she was getting bored and wanted to try something different rather than continue making a half-hearted attempt at soccer.

Damn… I could be the archetypical soccer parent and push her back into it, make her go to practice and bully her into playing, but I’m not that kind of person… Her reasons are solid and she’s not doing this for me. My little girl is growing up and increasingly often displaying levels of maturity that astonish me. Wow…

I’m going to give it a week and see if she changes her mind, but tonight I’ll call her coach and the team mom to warn them in advance.

I got her grades tonight. Given several A's one B and an F in advanced math, I definately believe her.

Indeed she can. I'm actually very proud of her for having the foresight to step back from this for a good reason. Now I merely have to hope she has the patience and self discipline to follow through on the study work.

Brenna is a very bright, thoughtful, intuitive girl. She is well ahead of her years where insightfulness and emotional maturity is concerned. She is very fortunate to be blessed with being raised by a man who has high morals and values. With time she will find her path~ (Hugs)
