I kept swearing that I would try to get this Journal updated sooner rather than later, but life has that really annoying habit of happening so fast that one either has to live it or step aside to write about it. I guess I shouldn’t complain too much that I’m staying involved and active enough to be too busy to update more often.

Chris’s soccer party went well and amazingly I came away with most of my sanity. Unfortunately I’d pushed my tolerance levels with the location the team had it at, Chuck E. Cheese Pizza. I had to wait in line for 10 minutes to order a sandwich and hot wings then wait another 30 minutes for it to be brought to the table. It was so busy (and chaotic) that Chris couldn’t even redeem his game tickets (I wasn’t going to wait 20 minutes for one of the four ticket counting machines to come free). Oh well, he was happy.

Brenna got back from Science Camp on Friday afternoon, and was practically beside herself with excitement. After a week away, she was full of stories about hikes and natural sights she’d seen. She was the only one able to deal with bugs in the cabin (including a squished scorpion and a live cricket). She told me how the cabin leader (a high school student in the leadership program) took good care of them and snuck the campers treats various nights. She also told me about the ghosts in the cabin, andsome interesting stories there. They hiked everywhere ("10 minutes to get from the cabin to the cafeteria" & "7 to 8 hour hikes in the hills"). I'm going to take her film in to develop assuming anyplace has their photolabs working (more formatting and resizing - bleargh).

Saturday, we attended an SCA event (Frost Dragon / Baronial Anniversary) up in Ridgecrest. This was the first event I'd gone to in nearly two months. Due to some concerns about the SCA locally, I was hesitant to attend, but I needed to pass along a gift to Ariana and subsequently got to see her receive her Award of Arms. For those of you not familiar or still trying to figure the SCA out, an AoA is the basic award the Society gives. Everyone starts out as a m’lord or m’lady (basic courtesies included. The AoA gives the title of “Lord” or “Lady” as appropriate and is granted to those individuals you’ve been contributing (help or participation-wise to the local SCA groups). As for myself, I didn't fence (still not mentally ready). Instead I let the kids sign up for the boffer tourney (soft foam weapons for kids). Chris fought and beat the one other competitor in his age group (the little girl he'd been playing with earlier in the day). Brenna fought in her age group but was out in two rounds (double elimination tourney). She kept trying to thrust instead of cut her opponents. I can't imagine where she could have learned that. Either way, Chris was called up into court, received his award in front of the King and Queen of Caid, and then we headed home. On the way back, it started to snow and sleet. The snow fall pretty much made the kids evening.

On Sunday we'd planned to go to Knott's Berry Farm. This was the last opportunity for me to take advantage of the Veteran's (Day) special Knott's offers each year. The weather was still iffy, or so it appeared. It looked nasty around the Antelope Valley and the National Weasel Service noted that there was a chance of showers and thundershowers in Anaheim. The problem was, the forecast only a day before hadn't even predicted this storm, so I searched for some of the southern California Web Cams. After viewing three that showed it was clear and nice in the LA basin, we went down to Knott's and had a grand day. Chris even got to ride his first big roller coaster, “Ghost Rider.” With very few people in the park, we saw a bunch of shows, rode a bunch of rides and had an all round good time.

I’ll actually try to post some photos of soccer and of this trip as soon as they’re processed.
