I believe I need to answer a couple questions. First the focal length and the slight fuzziness, was a small problem with the camera that has been corrected. At the time I shot the photos, I didn’t notice the problem in many of them. Rather than discard them, I added to the effect by enhancing the background color, contrast and adjusting the input levels in post processing. In a few cases, I was trying to get a wide field of view.
As for the location and backgrounds, the Dr. Sketchy’s LA shoots/sessions are done at the Bungalow Club in Hollywood. This room happens to be an upstairs private lounge. The room has a pole for the more excitable dancers. The Private Party sign was merely an accent that I actually tried to catch in several of the shots for the implied message.
Last but not least, I spoke with Lulu about the costume she chose and her performance styles. She dances Burlesque, Middle Eastern Fusion and traditional Raq. The mix of costumes was a reflection on that. As to the comment of the mixed messages, I’ve drummed (Dumbec and Dombe) for dancers in the SCA for about 5 years on & off. I’ve drummed for dancers in traditional costume, pro cabaret costume and what could be called “fire fuckers.” Lulu’s costume choice was appropriate for the situation and the venue in question (sketch artists mainly recording alternative performers and models).
