Last week,
badgerphone, my kids and I embarked on a road-trip adventure into the back country west and north of Lancaster. We stopped at a few old sites and a few new ones. Three sites are covered in this post: The Mott House, The Ranch Ruins and The West Valley Shack
Cruising north out of Palmdale, we spied the Mott house. I call it that, because there was a large volume of bills, letters, correspondence and even 1980’s era slides addressed to “L. Mott” (first name omitted for privacy.

Connect the dots

The Mott House was actually a three building farm complex. The main house “Connect the Dots” and this house adjacent.

In the back was a shed/chicken coop combo. The county had securely boarded up the place and chained the doors to prevent use.

The back of the coop

Angie exploring the collapsed coop
What was disturbing about this place was the various, very personal effects. Notes for the doctor’s appointments, legal notices, counseling appoints.. all for a youth. The air of sadness practically oozed from this site.
From the Mott Farm we drove north to Avenue I and checked out an old ranch that burned down last year.

My adventuring companions

New life and promise

With death close at hand

Little remained here but memories blowing in the desert breeze
After the ruins we headed west, out to the fringes of the Antelope Valley, towards Gorman. Before getting there, we revisited another ‘old friend’ – the West Valley Shack.

Why would someone kick in a door when the adjacent wall has been gone for years?

Time and the elements are slowly catching up with this squatter’s shack

Soon it will won’t even be fit to shelter thumbleweeds
Coming shortly, The Roadhouse, a nature side trip and associated wildfire, and Livin Large in a Doublewide.
