Abandoned Places – Hwy 58 to Route 66 (part 3)

From the Pigeon Homes we continued eastward. The sheer number of abandoned / closed up houses and businesses along the highway was nothing less than astonishing. After counting 20 sites, I simply gave up. There were so many of varying types and uses, that I simply couldn't choose what places to explore or leave. Many were recently boarded up by the transportation department crews. In a few cases, there were still unused boards and bolts sitting hidden in porch areas of houses. All the houses still had electric meters attached.





This house regularly caught my interest and attention, now I had the chance to finally look inside


At one time, a loft had been built in a half circle above the ground level and a heavy duty vent system was built into the peak. The loft has broken from several of it’s mountings and one side now rests at floor level.

Nearby were several houses, trailers and outbuildings

What I found most poignant at these sites were the little hints of lives uprooted. This is a little girl’s formal dress.


Nearby sat two more empty sites


Some houses in the area were still occupied, and traffic on the highway nearby still roared by in a surreal parody of life. Soon it will all be gone.

So why are these places all boarded up? Did people die? move away? Did a supporting industry collapse?

Some of the places you have shown seem to be very isolated or part of a large closure - the bases - but what about these groups you have been talking about lately? What's the story? I am soooo facinated!

These houses and many others lay on a right of way the State of California was drawn up to expand Hwy 58 (which runs through their front yards). Old Hwy 58 is very narrow and very dangerous. When they expand the roadway, it will go to a 4 lane - freeway configuration with limited local access.

thsi is not far here i am (sucking on a dark chocolate cherry coridal from yes schimpff's) and i look at angies picture of the prison and its so unfair i would love to go there and i can't but i did stop a nice place on the way to deam's lake is a small stone building on the side of the road infront of a small pond and it had i think vines growing up it and there is a borded up gas staison in the area sping ave or street or something that looks abonened. now you have to take me to the wavery place for going to the prison without me. oh and on the up side for me and chris mom bought us each our own nintendo ds
