Garden of the Gods, CO - 2010

For those who don't know, I'm on the road for work. Yesterday I had off, so I made a drive out to one of Colorado's most incredible natural attractions - The Garden of the Gods. This is a phone camera pic (since I can't download shots till I get home), but I thought it might be appreciated anyway.

You must have done something right because the first thoughts on seeing this was "Oh... WOW!"

Thank you. I was impressed how the little cell camera handled this panorama.

The area is very beautiful. Almost has that magical feel to it, but that could be oxygen starvation at altitude. I enjoyed doing a bit of hiking and shooting there. May do more today (as I'm off duty again today I think).

I'd know that rock anywhere!

I noticed your location as Colorado Springs the last few days. I was hoping we'd be treated to some shots from the area. I lived there for two years. The Appalachian Mountains here in NC are beautiful, but they just can't match the Rockies.

In the last two days I've had less than normal taskings (I was answering e-mails while I've bene out both days), I've shot over 300 high def frames. Some of these are doubled images (taking two to be sure I have it), but most are singles captures. The last two days have made me very happy to be able to get out into the countryside and wander. Today I went up to Helen Hunt Falls in North Cheyenne Canyon Park. The falls and streams flowing from them were wonderful subjects. Oh should I mention that the falls are at 8100'?

Oh, my god, Helen Hunt Falls! I can't tell you how many times I went there. No trip was complete without jokes about how it must have been named for the actress. My cousin and I would always climb higher than the rest of the family was willing We'd eventually reach a point where we could wander around...somewhere further up, where it was lusher, less rocky. I can't remember that well, it was 18 years ago (aah!).

Another favorite of mine from the area is Cave of the Winds, and the shops in Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City. My father and I used to go there alone on Sunday afternoons when it was nice and just take everything in. Plus, there's a chocolate shop there where they sell these giant, mutant strawberries covered in chocolate, and wowwwwwwwww.

And we never managed to get up to the Royal Gorge, but I hear that's fantastic (and a little scary to cross).

There's just so much great stuff to do and see in that area. It made for the best field trips when I went to school there. I'm hoping to take my guy out there some time this year or next year and show him everything.
