Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School LA
drsketchy_la is something of a semi-formal underground art studio session using non-traditional models. According to organizer
katetritto, there are versions of Dr Sketchy's "school" going on in NY, Austin, TX and a couple other cities, but surprisingly it wasn’t here till now. The LA / Hollywood version of this is “is what happens when burlesque meets art school” and has a decidedly relaxed feel to it. The subject of this session was “Nina la Fiamma” . She is a classically trained dancer, experienced burlesque performer and performance artist in the Los Angeles area. Her MySpace gives a number of links to performance groups she works or worked with. The location of these session was the upstairs lounge of the The Bungalow Club on Melrose Ave, Hollywood CA and happens every other Sunday from 2pm-5pm. The next session is October 15th.
As you’ll note from most of the pictures, many of the poses were reflections of the classics recorded by Degas, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec. The beauty of this is that unlike art schools and college art courses, the models being used at the Dr. Sketchy sessions are performers who are comfortable with their body and willing to express a wide range of poses and positions. I’m looking forward to shooting more of these sessions.

Deep in thought

This version using flash causes the background to disappear and highlights the model only

This version without flash is warmer lit, but required greater care in balancing the foreground and background.

You feel the eyes upon you
