This is interesting. Yes, I'm a Democrat in my concerns, but I wasn't expecting this result. Curiouser and curiouser... This is from a TV station in the Quad Cities area of eastern Iowa.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] dragonhearth for posting this originally.

I'm a Kucinich fan, myself, and I find it very sad that there is no way he'll win. It's the same way I felt when Jerry Brown ran in 1992. I loved what he stood for, but running under the Green party, and against Clinton (who is much more charismatic), there was no way he'd win, either. Kucinich is very pro-environment and is the closest canidate to the Green Party's message (yes, I'm a Green). You never know, though. A lot can happen in a year!

Of the three candidates that tied on my taking of the survey, I would lean towards Richardson now. Kucinich may be the straightest talker of all the Dem's, but he's not drawing in the number of grass-roots supporters he needs. I think he'd be a great Sec of the Interior or HHR. Edwards is just a bit too populist for my tastes. Although he seems to have a good platform and good positions, his experience is so so (though it's far better than Obama's). He'd make an outstanding VP with a strong candidate to balance the ticket).

I'd discounted Richardson up until recently, but the more I think of it he might be a very viable choice. He's a Governor, former diplomat, former Cabinet Secretary. Good experience, former military background and potentially clean of the ugly 'liberal' label that many GOP attack dogs and pundits luv to beat people with.

I'm pretty much in line with Kucinich, although I'm not a fan of subsidies for ethanol or biodiesel (because I think it's a scam, not because I'm not in favor of alternate energy).

I dunno about Richardson. Although at this point "Not a fascist" would be a good start, as far as I'm concerned.

I would agree with the non-Fascist comment. Anytime I hear adminstration staff mentions 'homeland' or King George pronounce 'Amerika', I cringe. It reminds me far too much of the old late 30's newreels about Germany and Italy, or the 50's reports on Stalin and Kurschev speaking before the Supreme Soviet. Slow decline into 'Das Vaderland' and 'The Motherland' scare the Hell out of me far more than any middle Eastern terrorist.

I find it interesting that although it looks like you and I only disagree on two things (taxes and social security), my top 2 candidates are Republicans. My bottom 3 are also Republicans! Edwards was my #4 and Richardson #5. My father (who is a Republican politician) got Richardson as his #1! :P

I don't like Edwards, but not knowing anything about Richardson, I'd give him a listen anyway.

There's one thing about the survey that I'm curious of. The first thing it asks for is a zip code to adjust demographic info. I wonder if in some respects that may or may weight a candidate versus a percieved point of view in certain regions. California is a supposed liberal bastion while the Dakotas are viewed by many as populist or conservative. If the poll wieghts or bias's the info, that could explain the results a bit. Given that its a local TV station in Iowa, anything's possible in terms of that.

I think I'm going to be looking more at Richardson to balance my views. I'm not willing to blindly vote for Hillary or Obama regardless of their 'front-runner' status. A for the GOP candidates, none of them (especially Mitt, Rudi or Fred) are high on my "trust them not to make things worse in the country or the world" list of people. Social conservatism in national politics is pretty much discredited in my eyes.

That's an interesting idea, but I don't live in the Dakotas anymore - I live in the inner city of Minneapolis, definitely a more liberal place than where I'm from! But still probably more conservative than California :)

The social conservatives were at the very bottom of my list, since I rated my positions on abortion and marriage as highly important. Bunch o' numbskulls! There are two guys even worse than Mitt! Fortunately no one's ever heard of them, but still...

Why didn't I remember that you were in Minneapolis?.. Believe it or not, some sections of California are very staunchly conservative. Orange and San Diego Counties are well known for electing (Corrupt) Republican (convicts) Candidates. Even the area in Northern Los Angeles County (read BFE), is fairly conservative due to the local defense industry.

I hope and pray to whatever higher benevolent powers there are that social conservatists won't get elected. Live and let live. That is what the country was founded on.

You may want to take the quiz again. I found, when I looked through their list of the views of each candidate that they mixed up the gay marriage question, such that if you say you "oppose" the bill saying that marriage is only between a man and woman, that you actually were voting that you oppose gay marriage, which is not what you intend. I wonder if that would make a difference in your scores.
