As announced on my facebook page, it's good news / bad news time. The good news, my mom and step-father FINALLY got married. The bad news, he's dying (end stage emphysema).

The rest of the story..

Chuck has smoked and drank heavily for the last 25 years of his life. While many in the family tried to get him to moderate, he didn't. It was his choice. It doesn't mean I agreed with those choices but they were his. I've considered him my step-father for that entire time and I'll love him dearly no matter what his choice was.

According to my mom, he's recieving hospice care and most likely has weeks to live. I say this not in sadness but in celebration of his amazing life.

My stepdad drank and smoked, and quit, but was always a big meat eater, very overweight, and no exercise. No surprise he died at 65 of colon cancer. But years earlier when he'd been warned that his habits would like lead to cancer and and early death, he said he'd rather live 60 years enjoying life his way, than 100 years denying himself the things in life that gave him pleasure.

I guess there's a lesson in there somewhere. :-?

I'm sorry for your and your mom's sake. And I hope Chuck feels it was worth it.

I'm sorry to hear the bad news, but happy to hear that in the face of sickness your step-father is still living his life to the fullest and doing what makes him happy. Especially by marrying your mom. I'm sending healing, positive and pain free thoughts to you and your family.

My dad also smoked heavily much of his life and even though he quit nearly 10 years ago, it was too late for him as well, still kicken, but...

it's never a bad time to celebrate the lives of those who touch our hearts :)

I am sorry for his condition, but glad that you have (and have had) that good relationship.

(My mother died of emphysema, after 5+ years of not smoking that followed 45 or so years of smoking.)

Death is never a fun thing, but am glad that you're celebrating him and not mourning before his passing.

In other news we aren't fb friends. This makes me haz a sad :(
